The Boat That Guy Built

Posted on 09 March 2011

For those of use who think that James May is the best Top Gear presenter, not Jeremy Clarkson or the Hamster, I think we have a new hero and a brilliant six part series to watch. The Boat That Guy Built is a half hour show on every Wednesday (episode two is on tonight 9/3/11) and features motorcycle racer and TT legend Guy Martin fitting out an old canal boat with the help of his best mate, Mave, and using only the techniques and inventions from the Industrial Revolution. For example in last weeks episode they decided the most important thing before they started anything else was to be able to make a cup of tea – Guy Martin is famous for his love of tea and there is even a saying that he will pass anything on the road except a tea van. They made a bowl to boil water in from scratch creating there own liquid iron and Guy made some mugs for it by throwing his own clay and then firing it.

It is definitely worth a watch and Guy Martin is definitely a star in the making with a brilliant and excitable personality that makes him come off as a really nice bloke on TV. You can watch the first episode on iPlayer here

The Boat that Guy Built…is absolutely brilliant. The two lads are funny, clever, inventive, down to earth, smart, cheeky, very sexy, educational and they make me smile at my TV … I’ve told everyone I know to watch this programme, it is so good. Love it. Thank you.

    • Dee says:

Totally agree! And having Liza Tarbuck narrating is the icing on the cake – a perfect match of characters and accents. I love this, love Guy (and Mave), and well done the Beeb for sticking with us northerners – down to earth, passionate and interesting we always have been.Guy definately floats my boat. More tea Vicar?!

    • Alyson says:

Chief !!!… What a fantastic programme…the best of the week. It is so funny and the lads are really interested in what they are doing and can turn their hand to whatever needs doing, unlike other programmes where celebs have a go at things and are absolutely useless. Very entertaining :)

  2. Pam says:

The boat that Guy built is wicked, i love it, down to earth (quite cute)blokes, very interesting and very moorish a definate plus for sunday evenings. Well done Guy & Mark!!

  3. Joe Baker says:

Interesting programme but James May a top presenter? Maybe if only I could understand half of what he says. I am not against regional accents but the BBC needs to remember that not everyone can follow such heavy twang without requiring a translator. Do us a favour and tone it down a bit.

    • Sarah says:

You ignorant moron do you not realise that’s the charm of the programme. I suggest you travel a bit further afield if you struggle to pick up small regional changes in accent!!

    • Rachel says:

Funnily enough, James May’s accent is posh, not regional. This used to be the only kind of accent you’d ever hear on the BBC (actually, they used to be much stronger), before they started allowing regional accents!

  4. will says:

A modern day fred dibnah, make sure this is not the only program he does! more please!

  5. Markhuss says:

Guy is an absolute legend; where I agree with all points made by previous entries except the goose who mentioned about “not all understanding regional accents?”

To top it all, the guy’s a motorcycle racer, so double legend in my opinion

  6. Angela says:

The programme is great and very funny too but I live a few miles away from where Guy comes from in NORTH Lincolnshire and take it from me that accent is definately more Yorkshire. People round here don’t talk like that although we do border Yorkshire over The River Humber. Each week we laugh at his accent and I think it’s a little bit put on for the camera.

    • Rob says:

That’s definitely not a Yorkshire accent – in fact it seems to be a mixture of several different accents and words, so I suspect it is put on for the camera a little. I don’t know anyone who uses the word ‘Chief’ so repetitively. Not authentic but very funny to watch.

    • scatch says:

i agree it,s not a lincolnshire accent but what a brillant show and trust me he talks like that all the time what you see is what you get with guy

  7. Layla says:

Love this show and love Guy. He is such a brave and interesting man and I hope we get to see more of him on shows like these. I’ve met Guy at some of the races and can assure you that he really is that lovely, that funny and his accent is definitely not put on.

  8. Duncan Hill says:

@Joe Baker, unless you’re not a native speaker of British English or hard of hearing, then you are a goose as the previous person said. His accent is perfectly understandable. I bet you’re a little Englander who expects every television presenter to wear dinner jackets and speak the Queen’s English.

  9. Andy C says:

I am absolutely loving this series celebrating British inventiveness. Guy and Mark are outstanding

  10. William says:

    Excellent. Long overdue.

  11. dave says:

one of the best shows in years Guy is a perfet replacement for the dearly missed Fred Dibnah , new series please when this one finishes !

  12. william says:

what part of canal was this film made, it looks really interesting.
Great show he is a great next generation Fred

  13. Belinda says:

Would just like to say what a fab show, Normally this would not be my cup of tea, but I have to say I am glued. Coming out of work to night I said I can’t wait for the boat that Guy built. Great show Guy’s hope there will be many more?

    Well done.

  14. Belinda says:

What a great show well done boy’s . I hope its not going to be the only show you do, its been very interesting. Even my daughter thinks its good I thinks that’s because of Guy!

  15. Cragrat says:

Does anyone know the music used during “the boat that guy built”, not the whistling theme music but during the programme?

    • johnny says:

they use loads of songs of 2 David Holmes albums, lets get killed and bow down to the exit sign, wicked programme.

  16. Richard says:

I have to admit I like Guy as he comes across as a very viewer friendly person and have enjoyed watching the series so far, but was expecting to see more than just odd bits to go with the boat. While interesting to watch it’s been a bit of a mish mash of oddments to fill the boat, and really the boat is only a series theme as what he’s done could have been for use with anything from a house to caravan. I must admit I was hoping for a Fred Dibnah replacement, but he doesn’t hold the same level knowledge or craftsmanship that Fred aspired too and his joiner friend is just that a modern joiner, and where the bed frame could have been a work of art with proper joints and shaped edges, it was nothing more than two by two screwed together, not a half lap or mortise and tenon joint in site.

I would like to see Guy doing a series where perhaps like Fred did, he goes around viewing and talking about great British things and inventions. Lose the boat and friend, but keep the blue overalls and quirky character, and it will be a winner.

    :) Richard

    • Jason Tolputt says:

Agreed! I’d like to see guy take a roll more like Fred, I do agree that guy docent seem to have the knowledge that fred did but I think a slightly more light hearted approach to the subject might be more what today’s generations need for this type of history to appeal. I’m 32 so only just caught the tail end of Freds programs and have watched the repeats which I loved but Im not sure they would appeal in quiet the same way to today generation.

  17. Steve says:

Are you all on the same planet ?

The boat that Guy built has very little to do with a boat and he certainly isn’t building it, if he had it would have probably sunk by now anyway.

It is neither amusing or interesting and seems to give the impression after watching last weeks episode that we can all steer (or not in his case) down the canals of Britain hitting everything and every boat in site without remorse or conscience.

What is the point of this program, we have so little on the TV on the subject of boats and canals so why on earth waste valuable prime time TV with a pointless display of how to blow up a shed with supply of gas or how to run your shower pump with a steam engine or build an alarm clock out of an old church bell by a wan-a-be Fed Dibner, who would have known that cotton does not come from a sheep!!

With many colorful working boats still on our waterways, would it not been enough to cover their history without introducing Bodgit and Bodgit to us as a real life Grommet and Wallace.

For goodness sake BBC grow up and give us some sensible, informative and creative coverage of our canals and narrow boats and scrap this rubbish or re-name the series without the word boat in the title and let Guy do as he wishes with the history of industrial Britain – all of which has been so covered in the past.

    • Dave says:

Steve – it is called entertainment. You weren’t the demographic the BBC had in mind, don’t worry about it.

    • Ian says:

With you Steve… or should I call you ‘Chief’ ?

    • Woody says:

Sorry Chief, but you don’t ‘get’ the point of the show, my 6 year old son loves the show, and has been glued to the TV each week, and happily trot’s off to bed after each episode, full of so that’s how they make matresses, and after the last in the series ‘want to make a victoria sponge this weekend.
My wife delays what ever she may have planned to watch with us, and a quick pole of friends and family say the show is a great hit.

The BBC should be snapping up Guy and Mavis for loads of other show, Guy is a modern excentric.

  18. Fiona says:

oh lighten up! This program is addictive. I wasn’t expecting or wanting erudite comment in the program. What’s wrong with some boyish, enthusiastic banter from personable blokes. (Love the regional accents, and I’m not just talking about Guy and Mave) I need some gentle entertainment sometimes, not just worthy documentaries. I can’t imagine how this program ever got commisioned but I’m delighted to watch it.

  19. Cragrat says:

I am answering my own query, the music is called “Nu Morning” if anybody else is interested. If you want to watch a programme purely on restoring/fitting out a narrow boat then can i recommend “Narrow Boat” on Quest TV presented by Tommy Walsh’s chippy mate. It seems to be constantly repeated during daytime TV along with all the “A …. is Born” series.

    • Mo says:

The music used in The Boat That Guy Built is : UNKLE – Trouble In Paradise (Variation On A Theme) hope this helps…Cheers Mo

  20. arkwright says:

angela / not a local accent you know well i worked on farms in the brocklesby /kirmington area and the owd boys spoke like that i also worked on the tetney marsh area totally different dialect dont know if they would have understood each other.
Steve narrowboat is okay love to know true costs of everything but this programme is industrial history and light hearted so sit back and enjoy.

    • Dobbins says:

“love to know true costs of everything”

the model steam engine which they used for the shower is available on the internet for a mere £1200

  21. mark says:

brilliant show ! an honest couple of presenters who make a subject/subjects i would not entertain as a rule a must see programe.who cares about the accents and the fact they are not building a barge from scratch (some programe titles must be confusing for people who take them a little too literaly,,for god sake dont watch time team as tony and friends have not perfected time travel)but concentrating on elements which i believe they like/care about with a passion. pity there are not more programes like this. more please ! sorry about the spelling. Mark

  22. Kay Wakefield says:

Love it….Guy you can have the top off my egg any morning…

  23. Vic says:

    Steve,
    Get a grip!!!!!
it’s not the end of the world!!! you know what they say, if you don’t like it, turn it off.
it’s just Light entertainment watching 2 blokes having a laugh, praising Fred Dibnah and legends of the industrial revolution, doing a right cack-handed job of doing a boat up or whatever; it really doesn’t matter. the fact that half of it sounds like a Monty Python sketch makes it even more amusing.
i only started watching it because a friend did something on it and was not expecting to enjoy it much but its well funny!!!
So sit back, have a brew and watch it for what it is.

    • Bex says:

Well said Vic! can’t believe someone has so much time on their hands that they would actually seek out a website praising a tv show (that they are not forced to watch)to say how much they don’t like the it and to attempt to insult the people who love it, what a time waster!!

We all love a good detailed documentary but for goodness sake Steve…get a life!

  24. diane blundy says:

Funny, informative LOVING it , but the one called Mave is it a nickname or short for something or a real name???

  25. marja says:

what a fab programme – even it it’s not about boat building, the banter between ‘boss’ and ‘chief’ is certainly entertaining. Tonights bean making episode was so funny.

  26. Uptonbrooker says:

Brilliant, couldn’t believe the accent didn’t copme form somewhere between Bolton and Rochdale Maybe the Owd boys from Kirmington orginally came from over that way. Brilliant Program fun light hearted and informative, keep it up!

  27. mike challinor says:

just watched the boat that guy built
i have not laughed this much in years ( please print the baked bean recipe ) fantastic series congrats bbc
    another series please

  28. Kwackajack says:

I love this programme on many levels. Its interesting and educational, the cheeky banter and boyish curiousity are a joy to watch and I love the fact that Guy in particular will have a go at anything and not just the manly engineering projects. Guy is a multi talented man and Mave is great to watch too – more please…..

  29. Anna says:

What an interesting & well made programme , a real fun way to spend half an hour & learn something too. Guy said he came from LIncolnshire so do I , I just wonder from what area to have an accent like that?

  30. Kurt says:

Guy is from Kirmington, and he talks like that all the time ,so not put on for TV, Ok boy!!

  31. Aidan says:

TT Legend? Not till he chalks up some wins can anyone be a legend, that aside, a very modest, enthusiastic and charming presenter. Great programme, and for anyone to think that accent is put on? just go look at his interviews on youtube. He’s 100% the real Guy. Hope this is only the beginning of a TV career, well done to the BBC ( for once)

  32. Roger says:

Loved it! Everything a good children’s programme should be.

  33. Chris Hudson says:

We were the cutlery manufacturers featured in programme 4 about Beans on Toast & I just want to say that what you see on the TV is the genuine “Guy” he is really interested, enthusiatic & wants to get involved, charming, definitely a bit of a “Jack the lad” but he’s down to earth, treated all the staff he met, not just those on the film, with genuine interest & respect. He’s definitely a natural & altho’ they are big shoes to fill & I’m sure he wants to be known as himself he can be the next “Fred Dibnah”. Everyone here wishes him every success & anytime he’s in Sheffield the quality controllers would love to make him another cup of tea (& yes, he does drink 20 mugs a day!!!)

  34. ray shenton says:

well done bbc the best programme on tv at the moment my only moan would be its not on long enough if you make anymore can you please make them an hour long. it was good to see the boys have a laugh as well as the enthusiasm they have for the tasks they undertake which have been interesting, the highlight of my weeks viewing infact one of the few programmes i watch since fred dibnah passed,
and to guy and mave i can relate to the grubby hands and cups o tea
but not the ammount of salt ye put inth beans
    regards ray

  35. Sharon says:

My husband wanted to watch this show and I was expecting the usual dreary history documentry but this is brilliant. I am hooked! Guy and Mave are really likable and it’s so nice to hear a Lincolnshire accent on TV. I though it was just my husband who said things like ‘water’ ‘reet’ and called every one ‘old boy’. Our whole family loves the show and hopes to see much more of Guy and Mave on the box so here’s hoping for a 2nd series!

  36. Sylvia Berry says:

Why is there a repeat of last Sunday’s programme being shown again tonight?

    • Ian says:

I have the same issue; you look forward to a new episode and then you find it’s the same one from two days ago. Licence fee ?

  37. Aunty Dee says:

    Well Done Boys
    Excellent show ,Enjoying every episode
    lv Aunty Dee

  38. Dobbins says:

Mave’s real name is Mark Davies

  39. Grisal says:

Gotta love this show, 30 mins of a day that the sun shines up and down the country. Thanks boys.

  40. Jay says:

I have not read all the posts but of the one’s I have read there is a lot said about Guy’s accent, the words used and the mannor in which he talks. I have close friends that have met and shared a few pints at the TT’s with Guy and he is exactly the same in every day life. My friends say he is just so accommodatning to his fans no matter where he is.

  41. TINKER RUSH says:

A great fella Guy, big hearted and passionate about all things with an engine.
Im sure his accent is pure Lincolnshire, I work in the area and the accent is warm and interesting, but definitely not Yorkshire or put on.
Great racer, mechanic, cyclist and good person, I love his new show and I hope he does this much more as he deserves success.

  42. noseyoap says:

Wonderful programme please keep it going. Very interested in watching him make the various items with such enthusiasm, wish we could see a bit more of it. I am from North Lincolnshire and he is right WATER is water thats what I often say! Definately have a good laugh when he is on could do with a few more programmes like this.

  43. Ian says:

Great concept and was so looking forward to it. But one word has driven me so mad, I’ve given up watching it regrettably.

The word “CHIEF” at any opportunity.

    What a shame.

  44. Ceryndrion says:

Well, he’s no Fred Dibnah, which is a shame, perhaps with more focus on the industry, and less on ‘renovation’ of a period narrowboat, which really he made a pigs ear of and without Mave there to actually do the work, he would be long sunk.

Stick him with just the engineering, and he’d grow into a diamond I am sure, just not yet..

And nobody can replace the memory of our fred.

  45. Neil says:

really trying to find the name of the classical music used in the background of this show sometimes – any ideas??

  46. Mike Milner says:

Rosie and Jim for adults, best programme on telly!

  47. Claire says:

What is the music at the very end of the episode 5?

  48. This show is just great . If that fella cant understand guy ,then he would have no chance of getting to grips with ours . we live just outside Newcastle whey aye man. the top TV presenters been our very own Ant & Dec.. so what is wrong with regional accents ???

  49. Mo says:

The music used in The Boat That Guy Built is : UNKLE – Trouble In Paradise (Variation On A Theme) hope this helps…Cheers Mo

  50. David F says:

I love this programme, its informative, interesting and entertaining and fun.Guy and Mav bring their personalaties into the show and their regional accents are just great “Chief” I hope there’s more to follow from these guys in the future.
I’d give it a 10+ thanks to all those involved in the making of this series

  51. Lee says:

Can anyone tell me the name of the music played on episode 5 at 7 minutes 43 seconds, and runs for about a minute. Thanks

  52. Interested luddite says:

Excellent series, I’m only sorry that next weeks show is the last one. Guys presenting is superb, his down to earth atitude and passion for things is marvellous and sadly lacking from so many things these days, Mave makes a cracking side kick and Liza’s style of narration is spot on. More of this please BBC.

  53. Dave B says:

Love it – been a real breath of fresh air!

  54. karl says:

I’d like to know what the music is in episode 5 (about 15 minutes in) where mave is going to paint the name on the side

fantastic series hope they do another one both guy and mave are really funny guys

    • Jon n Jen says:

The best programme on TV by far. For 30 minutes put your feet up and enjoy letting Guy and Mave exercise your chuckle muscles. A recipe for happiness. Check it out chief. More tea vicar.Love it.

  55. brian says:

    EEEE NOW THEN CHIEF.
    Fantastic program.
I think in you we have found a new FRED DIBBNER

  56. skapete says:

i really hope another series is on the cards! good, informative, enjoyable, tranquil, comedic fun, more please! these guys are wicked

  57. Brian says:

This is the the best thing on the beeb at the moment. My kids, 19 and 26, keep rewatching it on the planner. The way Guy and Mave try their hand at everything and have great fun into the bargain. Brilliant or dare I say peachey.

  58. Rob Mc says:

Fantastic, Ive cast brass and cut gears at home and its great to see a real hands on show at last. There is a real beauty that comes across in the true craftmanship of making the very well chosen subjects. Objects of desire ! a hot shower , beans with tea and a comphy bed, who could want more. excellent.

  59. Colin says:

Once in a while the BBC takes a risk and creates a true gem of a TV series. This is one of those times.
Well done BBC, look after Guy and nurture him. He really does have a TV future.

  60. karl says:

no the posts further up are mentioning a different piece of music lol

im talking about the piece thats playing when mave is about to paint the name on the boat

its the timpany drums that are playing

  61. Bruce says:

Brilliant show, i hope they make more shows, everyone in the house loves it, fom 4yr old to 40. the 4yr old calls it “that guy in a boat”

  62. Jason says:

What great programme i think the BBC have just found the next Fred dibnah.Guy has such passion and interest in everything to do with our industrial past.I hope the BBC give Guy another series along the same lines as Fred dibnah did.Well done BBC.

  63. Jason says:

Brilliant show i think the BBC have just found the next Fred dibnah.Guy speaks with such passion and interest about our industrial past and just like Fred dibnah he tells it in a language we can understand. well done to the BBC, lets hope we get more from Guy martin.

  64. Claire says:

ok guys answered my own question the music at the end of episode 5, when they launch the boat, is by Rob Dougan, and its called ‘speed me towards death’ its the instrumental version!

  65. Simon says:

Very enjoyable programme, but can we have anything else Guy is commissioned to do less cbeebies please with a lot more technical and in depth discussion/explanation?

  66. Chris says:

    Naaar then!

I come from a town called Immingham, little more than 5 miles from where Guy was raised and I can assure you that his accident is nothing less than genuine. Possibly a little stronger than the norm but bonafide nonetheless. When I moved away to uni I was ridiculed for my harsh sounding ‘ar’ sounds such as car and scarf, which in Lincolnshire are caaarh and scaaarhf. Absolutely fascinating to see the Northern Lincolnshire accent on prime time TV. Not as broad or recognisable as some accents but a warm one, as someone else mentioned.

  67. sharkeater says:

I’ve been watching this as an American (who is fond of history, especially brit) and loving it. I wish we had more programming like this state side.

I wonder what they’ll do next season?

  68. Ellouminous says:

Great show, but does anyone know the piece of music played on the latest episode at 24mins 45secs. It sounds like a background xylophone solo piece.
    Pleeeeeeease help!
    Thanks!

  69. Bastett says:

This is a wonderful, charming, interesting and educational show. I’d love to see them do the same on a train in the Edwardian era.

  70. Tommy says:

Wonderful show, i hope they make more shows, I dont like Tv but this program has got me hooked. Guy is such a nice bloke.

  71. Steve says:

How sad that such a good show has come to an end. Well worth the licence fee. Interesting amusing, genuine people excellent show. Come on BBC lets have more.

  72. Jackie Green says:

Well done lads! The programme was fantastic. My son is home schooled and we have watched as part of his education programme. He has learned a great deal from viewing and has been enchanted by the brotherhood of Guy and Mave, the chiefs. Thank you to both of you and to the BBC for making this programme. Maybe if more programmes were made in this way then the children would take more of an interest in their history and how it has shaped the country to become what it is. Maybe Politics could be shown more in this way and then the youngsters would understand and would have more of a say in the future. Just a thought. Thanks again.

  73. Julian Collyer says:

My wife and I thought the series was absolutely rivetting, at the end Guy said “What next maybe train’ This is what my wife Kathy and I guessed at please make a new series, we cant wait.

    • Richard and Allison says:

Really good series, very watchable and fun. Our kids (8&10years) loved Guy and Mave as they giggled, made mistakes but ultimately triumphed. It brought history to life for them, without it even feeling like history, brillian. Please commission them to build a train.

  74. Rachel Nicholls says:

More from Guy Martin please! I’m devastated that ‘The Boat that Guy Built’ has finished!

  75. Steve Searle says:

This series was awesome, so funny, smart and educational me and my step daughter loved it. Please BBC let Guy and Mave work their magic on a train…

  76. Jamie says:

Absolutely fantastic chief, Guy and Mave have the perfect friendship, what a laugh they must have in their normal lives. At the end of episode 6 they mentioned about a next series on trains, oh please BBC, let it be, commission a new series.

  77. Linda Harrild says:

Guy is the next Fred Dibner, and Mark Davies is brilliant with him.

The show was too short, six episodes was not enough it has left me wanting more. Get the duo back on again doing another project but longer please

  78. John says:

Well done BBc. brilliant programme. The Hairy Bikers of technology! Great programme

  79. BaldE says:

I must admit I think the BBC have found a decent bloke to walk in the steps of Fred and carry on the great tradition of bring to life our rich modern history.
    Cracking programme Chief

  80. karl says:

did anybody get chance to listen to the music ?
it was played again in the last episode around 15 minutes in
I’m sure I’ve heard it before
have e-mailed the good old beeb but they only sent me to their website no luck there :-(

  81. Ian Marshall says:

Come on BBC, more of Guy and Mave please – this is quality TV. Hope they do another series and if they do take on a train it’s bound to be a right laugh, excellent programme.

  82. Boakesey says:

Thoroughly enjoyed the whole series, which was very entertaining and pitched just right for a wide family-based audience.

Would LOVE to see it on DVD (or Blu-Ray etc) so I can watch it again and again once the iPlayer availability ends.

Would also like to see MORE – please, Auntie Beeb?…

  83. Craig says:

    Hi all,
For those of you who want to see more of Guy, he gets most of the air time in the Isle of Man TT documentary TT3D Closer to the edge (currently at some cinemas). He has also signed a deal with the beeb for another 2 series.

Oh yeah, Ive met him a couple of times, and his accent is not put on.

  84. Cai martin says:
