In the annals of television history there have been some truly awesome gems that have slid more or less under the radar, and left our culture the poorer for it. One of these was Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.
The show was based around characters that had appeared in classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons in the ’60s and ’70s. Of these some were more familiar to modern audiences than others -such as Scooby Doo.
The lead character was Harvey Birdman. In his previous incarnation he was a superhero, but now he instead did battle in the courtroom. The show in which he was originally seen was Birdman and the Galaxy Trio. other characters from that show, which ran until 1969, that appear in HBAAL include Birdman’s eagle sidekick Avenger. Vulturo is recast as a rival attourney.
Spanning 2000 to 2007 a total of 39 episodes were shown as part of Comedy Central’s ‘Adult Swim’ block of programming. If you are in the USA you can see some of the episodes online here.
During the show Birdman would represent characters from the archives of Hanna-Barbera in a variety of legal situations. This created comic effect, as realistic legal situations that real life legal professionals deal with such as compensation claims.
